A longtime Children’s Square USA employee has died.

Lloyd Herbener, 82, director of planned giving, died unexpectedly early Wednesday at his home in LaVista, Neb.

“It’s a big loss for Children’s Square and for Lloyd’s friends and family,” said Bill Ramsey, who worked with Herbener as a board member and board chairman. He called Herbener a “good friend and quiet hero.”

“He’s kind of a quiet hero, I would call him – never seeking any praise for himself, ever,” he said. “It always was in the name of and for the good of Children’s Square. We will all miss him.”

Carol Wood, CEO of Children’s Square, said Herbener was “a gentle man in the true sense.”

“Family was extremely important to him,” she said. “I always enjoyed hearing the stories of his family and his grandkids.”

Herbener joined the staff as director of planned giving on Aug. 11, 1997, she said.

“In this capacity, he has cultivated many relationships and assisted individuals and couples in their thinking about charitable gifts both today and as a part of estate planning,” she said in an e-mail message. “Gift planning such as this takes years and years to mature. The seeds Lloyd has planted in his 13-plus years of service in this organization are ones that will be realized in future years. We will miss Lloyd, as will the many friends and donors with whom he worked.”

Said Ramsey, “He has done an excellent job of keeping track of our good friends who have been supporting Children’s Square all through the years. I’ve always admired his tenacious abilities on this kind of work. He’s helped in many other ways, as well – a real trooper, in that sense, and very faithful to the mission of Children’s Square.”

Herbener is survived by his wife, Bonnie; sons Jeffrey (wife, Debbie), Steven and David (wife, Ann); daughters Catherine Herbener (husband, William McMullen), Wendy Mehne, Corinne Mittag and Sara Deitering (husband, Keith); and 14 grandchildren.

The family will receive guests tonight from 5 to 7 at West Center Chapel, 78th Street and West Center Road in Omaha. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at West Center Chapel, with private interment at Hillcrest. Memorials may be offered to the family.
